Principal Strategy Term 4 – Learning Management systems, Social Media and Collaboration

Every Principal in every school, government and non–government, must have both a policy and strategy for implementing collaborative learning in the 21st Century. It is about a new learning system for students and teachers.

This is a HUGE challenge where all schools must introduce new learning technologies. Each school must have a school collaborative portal which allows interaction between staff, students, parents, other classes, school communities, states and global communities. The strategy of course must include the current social media that students and the community are using portals, wikis, blogs, Twitter and more.

There is a BUT that all Principals must be aware of:

  1. It must be secure.
  2. It must deliver educational OUTCOMES.
  3. It must allow reporting against standards.
  4. It must allow virtual learning anywhere, anytime.
  5. It must be self paced.

Before you commence considering such learning technology changes, as a Principal you need to REVIEW the following in your school:

  • Your Leadership and vision - Strategic Leadership focusing on:
    • Operational Leadership
    • Curriculum Leadership
  • Student Learning experience:
    • Planned and actual
  • Your school Curriculum and assessment
  • Extending Learning Opportunities for students
  • Professional Learning for staff
  • Digital Citizenship and Participation
  • Infrastructure and Resources needed

Each school must have e-Learning Platforms, e-Content delivered by video, teaching and training resources that connect to software and hardware delivery mechanisms, such as IWB.

It is about integration of various technologies to achieve pedagogical outcomes. Why implement new Learning Management systems, including social media?

  1. Teachers adapt old and create new curriculum content and then deliver lessons
  2. Teachers can assess and report to school, local and national standards
  3. Parents can receive notifications and assist their children and teachers through this secure portal
  4. Students can collaborate and participate in many media sources – email, video conferencing, blogs, wikis – they learn and it’s fun
  5. Portals can be made private or public
  6. School calendars can be shared
  7. Students and teachers share folders – to plan, save to and assess
  8. Students are empowered, they learn anywhere and anytime - distance is irrelevant
  9. Students can share and collaborate with each other and the wider community
