The Classroom of the Future Designathon

The 2019 Schneider Electric Innovation Summit hosted world class speakers, thought leadership discussions panels and engaging workshops to showcase emerging technologies, products and solutions of the future. However it was the inaugural Student Designathon that tackled the hard hitting questions!

Over 50 students from 3 Sydney schools were invited to participate in a sustainability workshop aimed at exposing students to real-world experiences in the STEM fields to help shape their learning paths and ultimately their career platform.

The students participated in a variety of sessions and workshops from industry experts all based around design thinking and how Innovative Technology Solution are driving all aspects of industry now and into the future.

Students formed 15 teams and were encouraged to ideate around the energy dilemma and then present sustainable solutions that create lasting positive change. The bold ideas presented were focussed on how society can address global issues such as poverty including access to food, energy, electricity and water.

Four step Designathon process

1. Define the Problem – By listening and making space for as many voices as possible within the community.

2. Be Inspired – By the world around and stories of day to day life. How does solving this problem improve quality of life.

3. Ideate and collaborate – Develop as many ideas from as many heads as you can. Diversity is key. No idea is too crazy!

4. Implement – Be ready to back your own ideas, learn when they might fall short of amazing and try again.

Testimonials

“Participation is all about getting young people into the business environment and opening their eyes to what they can do. As teachers, we can talk about engineering or STEM careers, but getting hands-on experience through the Designathon Mentoring Sessions gave firsthand experience and advice to help the students in deciding their future path.”

– Brad Wilson, Head Teacher Industrial Arts, Pennant Hills High School

“Participating in initiatives such as the Designathon are an unmissable opportunity to learn more about what inspires future careers choices in these students, and enables ASI to share how we are continually inspired by the schools and organisations we work with.”

– Anna Perez, National Education Manager, ASI Solutions

Innovation is not just about technology products and services. It is about being collaborative and problem solving. It is everyone’s responsibility to innovate and innovation itself is in our DNA.
