THE CHALLENGE

Maximising student engagement through ensuring devices are charged and ready for use

THE SOLUTION

Deployment of Power Technologies charging solutions, provided secure charging infrastructure across the campus

THE RESULTS

Seamless access to fully charged devices, better student accountability and uninterrupted learning

Overview

Servite College in Western Australia is a digitally progressive secondary school with a fully deployed 1:1 device program. Every student is issued a Microsoft Surface device, which they own and are expected to charge at home. Despite this, teachers frequently faced the challenge of students arriving with uncharged devices, disrupting the flow of classroom learning.

To maximise the effectiveness of student devices, Servite partnered with ASI Solutions to deploy a professional charging solution that could scale with their student population and support seamless, tech-enabled education.

Challenge

Although the college had invested significantly in personal devices for every student, daily use revealed a gap in infrastructure. Students who failed to charge their devices at home, and battery life sometimes fell short of the demands of a full school day, this meant that there were times when students could not fully engage. The school initially managed with a custom-built, 15-slot charging station managed by library staff, but this proved inadequate for their 1,000+ students.

The lack of charging options placed additional strain on IT staff, who had to manually plug in and monitor devices. Some students avoided using this system because they didn’t want to get in trouble for not charging their devices. A scalable, secure, and user-friendly solution was needed to maintain digital continuity in classrooms and support the broader learning strategy.

Solution

Servite College implemented PowerVault+™, SC-LOCKER™ and portable AC-MINI™ units from Power Technologies, supported by ASI Solutions. Students now have access to professional-grade charging lockers, allowing them to tap in with an RFID-enabled card and leave their devices to charge anonymously during the day. Portable battery units add flexibility for students who need to power up on the move.

The solution has normalised device charging without stigma and encouraged responsible usage through seamless access and accountability.

Students can charge their devices without judgement or fuss. The RFID cards mean they don’t have to remember codes or which locker they used, and they’re not embarrassed to ask for help. That alone has made a massive difference to learning continuity.

Results

The introduction of PowerVault+™, SC-LOCKER™ and AC-MINI™ portable chargers has significantly improved device readiness across Servite College.

Students are now regularly using the lockers, and the IT department has shifted from manual device handling to data-driven support strategies.

With usage data now available, the college can proactively identify students with recurring charging issues and support them without creating shame or disciplinary barriers.

The system has also unlocked new conversations with parents and teachers around student behaviours, forming the basis for broader engagement strategies around device care and responsibility.

To me, it’s about continuity of learning. If a student has a charged device, they can engage in lessons from the moment they walk into the classroom. That’s essential for a 1:1 device program to succeed.
