From 24 September, the Surface for Business range picks up two compact additions. Surface Pro for Business 12-inch and Surface Laptop for Business 13-inch, powered by Snapdragon® X2 Plus processors, bring on-device AI into devices light enough to carry all day.
For most commercial and local government teams, the constraint has never really been the device. It is the gap between where the work happens and where it gets recorded. Site inspections, development assessments, asset rounds, client visits, depot checks. Very little of that happens within range of the corporate Wi-Fi, and the write-up usually waits until someone is back at a desk with a notebook full of things they hope they remembered correctly.
The NPU is the upgrade
Both devices run a Qualcomm® Hexagon™ NPU rated at 80 TOPS, up from 45 TOPS in the previous Snapdragon® X Plus generation. That is the number that matters, because the NPU decides how much AI work a device can do on its own rather than sending it to the cloud.
The practical effect shows up in ordinary work. On a Teams call with a deck open and Outlook behind it, automatic framing, portrait blur, eye contact, voice focus and live captions all run on the NPU. The CPU gets on with the work you can see. The machine stays responsive and the battery goes further.
A few of the experiences that enables on these Copilot+ PCs:
- Click to Do reads text or images on screen and suggests the next step in your workflow.
- Recall captures contextual snapshots of your desktop so you can find what you have seen by describing it.
- Improved Windows search finds files, settings, text and images from a plain description.
- Live captions translate speech from 40+ languages into English, on the device.
Worth noting when you build the order: Copilot+ PC features need 16GB of RAM or more.
Where 5G changes the shape of the job
The Surface Pro for Business 12-inch with optional 5G is the one to look at for field-based teams. It connects directly through carrier networks when trusted Wi-Fi is not available, which covers most of the working day for a council building surveyor, a compliance officer, a site supervisor on a build, an agronomist walking a crop or a crew working a mine site.
The usual workaround is tethering to a phone, or filling in paper and re-keying it back at the office. Neither is a system. A device with its own connection means inspection forms, GIS layers, asset records, client notes and site photos go in once, on site, into the same Windows applications your team already runs. It will also run as a hotspot for up to eight devices, which covers most crews.
The hardware around that connection is built for the same conditions. At 707g with 5G on board, the device supports both NanoSIM and eSIM, has built-in GNSS location and a 10MP rear camera for capturing a defect where you find it. Microsoft rates the anti-reflective 500 nit display as up to 25% brighter than the previous generation, which helps when the office is outdoors. The Surface Slim Pen stores and charges on the back of the device, so marking up a plan or capturing a sign-off does not mean going back to the ute for a second piece of equipment. The pen is sold separately.
Because those AI features run on the NPU, they keep working when the signal does not. A basement car park, a plant room, a site at the edge of the network. 5G coverage is not available in all areas, so check it against where your teams actually work.
For the people who are mostly at a desk
The Surface Laptop for Business 13-inch is the office-side device for the same organisation. Planners, coordinators, project managers, report writers, the people who turn what the field team captured into something a committee can approve.
The 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen is the underrated part. More vertical space means less scrolling through a report or a spreadsheet, and a document that looks like a page rather than a letterbox. A fingerprint power button gets people signed in quickly, and Wi-Fi 7 holds up in a chambers meeting or a boardroom with the whole team connected. The 6GHz band is not available in all regions.
The Surface Mouse for Business (2nd Edition) lands alongside both devices and suits shared or pooled kit. The ambidextrous shape works in either hand and across a range of hand sizes, and the clicks are soft, which matters more in an open-plan floor than it does at a home desk.
Security that starts before Windows does
Both devices ship with the Microsoft Pluton security processor, which anchors keys and credentials in hardware and supports TPM 2.0 and BitLocker. Both are Secured-core PCs with Windows 11 protections on by default. Sign-in is passwordless through Windows Hello: facial recognition with Enhanced Sign-in Security on Surface Pro, a fingerprint power button on Surface Laptop. NFC authentication is supported for organisations already issuing physical keys.
Surface UEFI is built with Patina and Project Mu open-source components through the Open Device Partnership, supporting memory-safe design and transparent firmware updates. Nobody has to remember to switch any of it on.
Where these fit in your refresh
The refresh decision in front of you sets how much AI capability sits on the desk, or in the ute, for the next three to four years. Worth making deliberately: which roles benefit from an 80 TOPS NPU, which are fine on what they have, and what your licensing and management posture needs to look like either way.
